The medical career field is one of the fastest growing fields in the world. As a result a lot of the highest paying jobs are in the health and medicine fields. The following four career fields are highly specialized and highly paid.
1. Dialysis Tech – A dialysis tech is responsible for setting up a dialysis machine, mixing dialysate, priming the dialyzer with saline, and transporting the patient to the dialysis room. After this the tech will check the patient’s vitals and explains the procedure to the patient. The tech will then clean and sterilize the area and connect the machine. The tech will also monitor the patient during and after dialysis. To become a dialysis tech one must obtain certification required by their location. No schooling is needed past the certification but having experience in the healthcare industry makes it a little easier to gain employment. Dialysis technicians also make quite decent money for the amount of work needed to become one.
2. Neurosurgeon – One of the highest paying specialists in medicine is neurosurgeons. Neurosurgeons require a lot of education. To become a neurosurgeon one must attend medical school first. After medical school the doctor will complete a six year surgical residency and a 2 year fellowship. A neurosurgeon diagnoses, treats, and performs surgeries on patients who suffer from injuries or illnesses of the nervous system. Neurosurgeons can make up to a million dollars a year.
3. Cardiologist – a cardiologist diagnoses and treats patients with injuries or illnesses of the heart and or blood vessels. One of the most specialized fields in medicine is cardiology. To become a cardiologist one must first attend medical school. After medical school the doctor will go on to complete a three year residency in internal medicine. After the residency the doctor will go on to complete a three year fellowship in cardiology. As you can see this profession takes a long time and lots of effort. Even though the pay at the end of the road will reflect the amount of effort it took to get there, it’s still a very long road so make sure you do your research before deciding if this is the proper path for you to take.
4. Gastroenterologist – A gastroenterologist is a physician who treats and diagnoses diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. They also perform surgeries and specialized medical tests. They treat a variety of diseases including irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel diseases, and reflux. To become a gastroenterologist one must first attend medical school. After the doctor has completed medical school they will go on to complete a three year residency. After the residency the doctor is eligible to complete a three year fellowship focusing on gastroenterology. They will receive specialized training in endoscopy which will include the proper use and operation of upper endoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy during their fellowship. A gastroenterologist makes between $100,000 to $500,000 a year depending on where they work and their amount of experience.
